Finding a magical Christmas Day 2: Ditching the “shoulds”
December 2, 2007
Music always helps me get in the Christmas mood, so I’ve been trawling the internet to find Christmas music that doesn’t require you to buy it, register for it, or retch from the sheer cheesiness of it.
But I couldn’t find any. Not one measly track despite Google’s endless search results.
I found myself getting more and more frustrated, thinking, “But I’ve got to write something on Christmas for the blog. I said I’d do a post every day.”
Trawling through those fake websites set up just for selling advertising space, I quickly felt any Christmas spirit drain away. Listening to awful renditions of Greensleeves on synthesizer or easy listening guitar left me tired, cranky.
So I’ve just been on a walk with Malcolm to clear my head, see the stars over Stromness, and get a grip. As we walked away from the town’s lights and the stars began to appear, I realized that hey, this whole “I have to do this thing because I should, it’s Christmas” is precisely what kills the magic of Christmas.
And that’s why I’ll have no inspirational book, song, film or activity today.
Funny, I feel a little Christmas cheer coming on already.

I just went in search for an image of Scrooge to illustrate this article and came across these two brilliant illustrations of Scrooge and Marley, courtesy of Mezzocielo on Flickr.
