New graphic design tutorial: The Contrast Rule

Graphic design is one of 4 elements to successful websitesI’ve been talking these past couple of weeks about how to improve your business website by making it look more professional and sleek.

I like to do things myself, and and I find tutorials to be the best way to learn. So I’ve written one about the Contrast Rule tutorial, one of the Big 4 Rules of Graphic Design.

Contrast is about making a statement with your design. It helps you stand out, grabbing attention in a classy — not obnoxious — way.

Learning how to use contrast well is particularly good for designing business cards too.

In the Contrast Rule tutorial, I’ve included examples as well as a homework section because no matter how many articles or books I read, it’s not until I try it out myself that I actually learn anything.

If you’ve already got a website, use the 4 Big Rules of Graphic Design as a checklist — see how many rules your website is following.

If you’re thinking of building your own website, these are the rules are that have most helped me design sites that look elegant and well-made.

I’m still very much working on being a good designer, by the way, but they say that good teachers are those that can know what it’s like to be a beginner.
