The Quest for local, all-natural, handmade, hand-dyed yarn

Pumpkin spice yarn from Elvincraft, a woman who raises the sheep and dyes the wool herselfNow that I’ve started knitting and become obsessed, I’m on a mission to find yarn that tells a wonderful, ethical story, like this one from Elvincraft that I’m working on at the moment.

I want to build a treasure trove of craftspeople who create yarn that’s:

  • from sheep that are raised in Britain, preferably Scotland
  • hand-dyed, ideally with natural dyes
  • organic or from a well-managed farm
  • produced by a small business or by a person who loves what they do

It’s a tall order.

The subtleties of hand-dyed yarn are glorious. With this yarn I call “Pumpkin Spice”, I see flashes of gold, tangerine and chocolate amongst the pumpkin. Knitted up, the colours play together in a way that you don’t necessarily catch immediately, but discover.

I’ll let you know what I come up with for eco-friendly, Scottish and British, handmade wool.

You should check out the Yarn Yard, they are based just outside Edinburgh and produce some wonderful yarns.

Just had a look and I might have to buy some of the pencil roving to get started with spinning. I particularly like that she gets her wool spun at a water-powered mill.

I wonder if you can visit in person…
