2 rules of business success
It’s been three years since I started down the road of having a dream business, so I know how hard it can be, doing what you love.
Staying true to your vision or sometimes even just making a living can be a real challenge, especially if you’re just starting out.
It took me a while to figure out what work was fulfilling, but I finally found it.
For me anyway, success started happening when I followed two rules:
The Do Good 2 Rules
- Do work that fulfills you
- Help others through that work
If you’re still wondering what to do, my article on how to start a business that fulfills your dreams might offer a starting place.
Helping people
For me, the “helping others” part is where my clients come in. My partner Robert and I work extra hard on every website because we only work with clients whose businesses we like, whose work is making a difference in some way.
In the helping others business model, the more I help you with your needs, the better the website will be.
That means you’re happy, and paying me on time, referring me to your friends, all that good stuff that’s going to help my business flourish.
“I did it myyyyy way”
Finally, a word about pursuing your quirky, bizarre, “it’ll never work” or “who would every buy that?” business. You’ll get a lot of people telling you you have to do things a certain way — the way everyone else does it, usually. They’ll require business plans, target projections, meetings in suits.
Yes, I know that’s usually very successful. But I also know if you’re dedicated enough, and truly serving others’ needs, success will also come to you. And it will preserve your soul in the process.
It’s been my experience that more you follow the scary path, the one that seems like you’ve wandered into the wilderness without any company or guide but that a stubborn voice inside says you have to follow, the better off you’ll be.
