Tips to improve your small business website
Just like a car, a website needs regular maintenance to perform at its peak.
Ignore it for too long and your content will grow stale, the design will go out of style, and your visitors will drift away to a website that looks like someone’s actually there.
“But I’ve got a business to run,” you say. You haven’t got time to be constantly working on your website.
But remember, your website is often your biggest source of new clients and customers. It’s your giant billboard to the world, and let it start looking tatty and your business starts looking tatty.
#1: Get web traffic software for your website.
Web traffic software like Google Analytics tracks where people go on your site. Web stats can also tell you what search phrases your visitors use to find you.
Much of it is free and relatively easy to install and use and it’s the single best way to see how much business you’re getting from your website.
#2: Review your website traffic report once a quarter.
Once you’ve got your analytics installed, review your reports every three months.
Look specifically at a few key stats (here are some suggestions of helpful Google Analytics stats), such as keywords people are using to get to your site. Then make sure you’ve got content relevant to those keywords.
#3: Invest in a Content Management System.
Content Management Systems (CMS) let you put content on your website instantly, without having to know HTML or any other special techie knowledge.
It’s a lot like using Word, where you’ve got boxes neatly labelled and ready for your text. You usually cut and paste from a Word document into the template, press a few buttons and voila! your content is up there for all the world to see.
We always provide a CMS with our websites because they’re so useful. They make it easy and quick to always keep your site up to date and fresh.
#4: Write an article once a month.
Share your pearls of wisdom, let your audience know a bit about you, the person behind the business. It can feel impossible to find the time to write, but it’s worth the investment.
Why? Because people find your article on recommended books, or simple tricks, and link to it. You start to build up a regular audience, your website rankings go up, and soon your business is doing better than ever.
